With so many showers, birthdays, and celebrations to attend this Spring, it is hard to find the perfect and unique gift. Well not any more. Recently, I discovered a delicate glass art form called Liuli, which literally means beautiful glass, at LIULI San Francisco. They just opened in March, with this being their first U.S. retail gallery.
The company was started in 1987 by former film star Lorretta Hui-Shan Yang and Chang Yi, a director, along with seven other associates.
The process of Luili can be compared to the traditional French technique of "pate de verre", where the artist mixes crushed glass with enamels or paint. The process of making Luili art is a long journey from sculpted clay to signature perfection. One small mistake in any part of the process can ruin the entire piece.
LIULI art is a combination of harmonic reflection and expression. Each LIULI design tells a story. Whether you are in the market for sculptures, stemware, jewelry, or collectibles, or for that matter, if you simply want to find your own expression in art, LIULI has a piece that will speak to you. No mass production here. Each and every glass creation is beautifully crafted, uniquely and individually made. Look at two of the same pieces, side by side, and you will see no two are exactly alike
The day I visited the gallery, I had just left the hustle and bustle of the Pier. The gallery was a welcoming oasis of tranquility. Loretta Hui-ShanYang personally designed the beautiful and intricate black tiles that fill the gallery floor. The retail area is separated from the gallery with floor to ceiling rotating mirrors, giving a sense of eternity.
We were greeted by Diana, the curator. She gave us an extensive tour explaining each object of art in fine detail. As she held each piece to the light, in her white gloved hands, she explained the vision behind its creation.
Finally, our personalized customer service ended at the complementary tea bar. They serve green tea and delicious moon cakes on LUILI tableware. This gave us a moment to sit and reflect on all that we had seen. LILUI is a beautiful sanctuary full of artistic delights. I actually, purchased few items that resonated with me. I can't wait to experience their beautiful energy at home.
