Instead of the usual red carpet, the MNKYTHMP grand opening had an orange carpet. In my studies, I learned that orange is a powerful color that stimulates enthusiasm and creativity. People who are fond of orange are usually thoughtful and sincere. After entering the fourth floor salon and spa, I found that Dave Bryant and Bruce Nelson, the founders, had indeed, thoughtfully created a space that embodied true enthusiasm and creativity.
When I walked into this ultra hip, modern new space with full length mirrors and treated concrete floors, I felt like I was back in New York again, not a stones throw from Union Square. This Redken elite salon was one-of-a-kind. Each stylist station had his/her own personal TV, piping in fashion shows. The signature cocktail of the night, the "Monkey Thump", (named for the MNKYTHMP Salon/Spa) provided by VeeV Vodka, was a delightfully light and delicious mix of ruby red grapefruit, vodka and nutrient-packed acai, which went well with the passed sushi and House music.
I spoke to stylist Gregory Rupert and asked him what he saw in his crystal ball for 2008 for the guys. "The trend for men's cuts in 2008 will be all about the details, clean hair lines, and classic styles. Very GQ." he said, with a boyish grin.
As I made my way to a quiet corner with mirrored furniture, I knew I had entered a Diva's domain. Didi McNeal, top makeup artist and eyebrow design princess led me into her kingdom. "Right now we have our own private label, but we might be making changes in the future. You should come in." I was already hooked by how luminous her skin looked.
Finally, I made my way to the four rooms where massage and facial treatments take place. Jarret, the massage therapist showed me around. I asked him which room was his favorite. He pointed to the esthetician room. I had to laugh to myself. Massage therapist are always eyeing the esthetician room. I took a quick peek into the well appointed room and saw that they were using Bioelements.
The night flew by, and all too soon it was time to leave. While departing, I thought, orange is also the color of success. And I am sure MNKYTHMP will have much of it.
This sounds like a very chic place to spend a Saturday afternoon! I will have to try it the next time I get to SF.
