It was anything but quiet and no one was speaking easy last Thursday night at the 944 August issue release party. The fashion and lifestyle magazine’s latest shindig was held at Slide, 430 Mason Street, once the location of a speakeasy back in the dark days of prohibition.
Members of the It Crowd filled the booths and hugged the back-lit bar, while flipping through the third San Francisco edition of 944. Sydney Leung owner of the other happening club, Endup celebrated with a group of friends and 944 fan Lisa Esquivel showed up to see and be seen. Vitamin fortified Lotus Vodka was the spirit of choice and music was courtesy of DJ Donovan.
The 944 August issue offers up all there is to know about San Francisco nightlife, featuring hot spots like The Press Club wine tasting room, hot people such as rapper LL cool, and hot tips on how to stay healthy and lookin’ good for the daylight after the nightlife. Actress and burlesque artist Dita Von Tesse graces the frame-worthy cover (photographed by Morand + Zwirner) donning a fabulous ruffled felt hat by Laura Kranitz and retro looking jewelry by Amrapali.

When it comes to fashion and personal style, a touch of vintage is always in and one of the best venues to find authentic vintage clothing is the biannual San Francisco Vintage Fashion Expo. Celebrating their 20th anniversary, the fall expo is scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday, September 20-21, at the Nob Hill Masonic Center, 1111 California Street. Lis Normoyle, co-owner of Vintage Fashion Expo, tells me that the current Frida Kahlo exhibit at MOMA has been a big influence on local style. Several dealers at the show will have Mexican embroidered jackets, hand painted skirts, hand-tooled handbags, and silver jewelry. Normoyle works with the best vintage dealers around the country bringing designer clothing, estate and costume jewelry, accessories, and textiles to San Francisco every year.
